We welcomed a group of motivated schoolgirls from a wide area around Munich. During the three-day workshop, the participants designed and printed their own 3D puzzles using CAD and slicing software. They gained practical insights into additive manufacturing technologies.

Title: Did you know multispectral imaging can map and monitor melt pool temperatures in laser-based additive manufacturing? As part of the InShape EU project, we’re using Silios’s high-precision multispectral camera to make this possible (Thierry BERTHOU). But first, we need to calibrate the camera to convert its measurements from digital numbers to actual radiance units. We recently had a productive session at TUM’s Laser-Based Additive Manufacturing (LBAM) Labs, where we took on the challenges within the machine environment using three spectral sensors and four calibration materials. Soon, we’ll be ready to measure absolute temperatures accurately with this new camera.

Title: Second week of testing in Garching for the InShape project! We’re back at TUM and Oerlikon, continuing our research using the EOS M290 BeamShaping equipment. Building on the results of the first iteration, we are now testing more challenging parameters to achieve our desired targets. We will also test parameters for the use case component . We were able to conduct a study in which we designed a laser beam shape optimized for a defined melt pool shape and validated it in a melting process. This event was a fantastic opportunity to connect with friends, clients, and partners. On SILIOS Technologies’ booth (525) you’re welcome to learn about multispectral imaging monitoring of a Powder Bed Fusion process for metals (PBF-LB/M). InShaPe project ‘s goal is to make metal-based additive manufacturing faster, cheaper and more sustainable. SILIOS is showcasing their off the shelf multipectral sensors and cameras from VIS/NIR to SWIR spectral range and their capability to design custom multispectral sensors like the one which will be used for InShaPe project. Over the next 3 years, our #AdditiveManufacturing project aims to further develop an innovative #PowderBedFusion process for metals (PBF-LB/M) for 4 industrial applications in the #aerospace, #energy and #automotive industries.

Title: In many industrial sectors, such as in the automotive industry, in #aerospace or in the #energy sector, the demand for special #metalcomponents that are light and have a high strength is increasing. Modern #gas turbines, for example, require extremely stable and at the same time lightweight heat shields. An important #manufacturing process for this is the powder-bed fusion process of metals using laser beam (PBF-LB/M). Depending on the application, the process is not yet always competitive compared with conventional production in terms of unit costs. The research and innovation project #InShaPe, funded by the EU with EUR 6.8 million, aims to make a decisive contribution to the further development of the technology. Under the coordination of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Katrin Wudy from the TUM School of Engineering and Design #TUMED at the Technical University of Munich ten partners from seven countries are working together on the project.
